Brainwash by Alien Labs. Oz Kush x Z 18: spicy, buttery, sweet. A brief cerebral shimmer, then full-body shutdown.

Brainwash by Alien Labs

Brainwash by Alien Labs is an indica-leaning hybrid (30/70) born from Oz Kush x Z 18. OG gas meets Z citrus at 27-30% THC, and the high hits in waves: a brief cerebral shimmer, then deep sedation that pulls the whole body under. sleepiness high, anxiety risk medium. This is a lights-out strain. Save it for the very end of the night.

Original Cali Pack by Alien Labs.

The Story Behind Brainwash

Alien Labs was founded by Ted Lidie in 2013, starting from a family of growers in Northern California. The brand grew from backpack runs of Mars OG and Girl Scout Cookies into one of the most recognised names in legal cannabis, eventually partnering with Connected Cannabis Co. to scale through the regulated market. Area 41, Baklava, Melonade: each release cemented a reputation built on obsessive pheno hunting and genuine love for the plant.

Brainwash is a collaboration between Alien Labs and Talking Terps, the project led by Hopelord. The two have been close since 2013, and this cross is the product of over a decade of shared growing, trading cuts, and chasing terps together. The Oz Kush side of the lineage traces back to 2015. Hopelord picked up a pack of seeds from Dying Breed Seeds (3rd Gen Family), and after pheno hunting through the pack, he and Ted selected a keeper that ended up in the Alien Labs stable. Oz Kush itself is a Zkittlez x OG cross through OG Eddy Lepp, sour and gassy, with a tart lemon backbone and classic indica structure.

The other parent, Z 18, is a Zkittlez phenotype. That clone came from a late-night mission to Willits in 2017. Hopelord and Ted drove out to pick up a single cut from Green R. Fieldz of Terphogz. One clone, one trip, one phenotype that would end up anchoring the candy side of Brainwash. When you cross the OG gas of Oz Kush with the fruit-forward brightness of Z 18, you get something that rides the line between old-school heaviness and modern terp complexity. The official Alien Labs description calls it “years of carefully considered deep tissue mind massages for your cerebral cortex,” and honestly, that tracks.

The Nose

Open the jar and Spicy warmth fills the air first, sharp and forward, with the Caryophyllene announcing itself in a peppery wave. Buttery richness follows, smooth and dense, coating the nostrils with an almost savoury warmth. Then Sweet opens up underneath, caramel-edged and deep, pulled along by the Limonene pushing lemon zest brightness through the top layer. Herbal sits in the middle ground, green and tea-like, while Citrus rounds the profile out with a tangy, slightly sour edge from the Z 18 genetics. Myrcene anchors everything with a musky, earthy base that holds the whole nose together. Dense, compact buds with green-to-purple colouring and heavy trichome frost.

The Smoke

The inhale lands spicy and buttery across the palate, thick and warm from the very first pull. The Caryophyllene activates immediately, pushing peppery wood into the mid-palate. As the joint burns down, sweet develops through the second third, sticky and layered, while herbal comes through as a cooler, more grounding note. The Limonene sharpens the exhale with a clean citrus tang, and by the final pulls, the Myrcene concentrates near the roach, thickening the smoke with earthy, resinous weight. Citrus lingers on the lips after you set it down. Even burn, pale ash, and a resin ring that builds fast.

The High

The first few minutes feel almost cerebral. A warm, floaty clarity settles behind the eyes, and the mind starts to wander freely, thoughts drifting without urgency. That window is brief. Within ten minutes, Sedating weight drops through the body like a slow tide coming in. Calming spreads outward from the chest, dissolving tension in the shoulders and jaw. Relaxed takes over the limbs, heavy and complete, pinning you wherever you happen to be sitting. Then Mind-Wandering returns in a different form: not the sharp, creative kind from the onset, but a slow, dreamy drift where half-formed thoughts dissolve before they finish. At full strength and 27-30% THC, the Myrcene and Caryophyllene partnership makes the sedation thorough and lasting. The anxiety risk sits at medium, so sensitive smokers should pace themselves, but the trajectory is consistently downward into sleep rather than up into overthinking.

Who Should Try Brainwash by Alien Labs?

At top-shelf potency, this is a strain for experienced night-time smokers who want total shutdown. The sleepiness is high and the sedation is real, so treat Brainwash as a closer, not an opener. Smoke it after dinner, after your last conversation, after anything that requires you to be upright. If you deal with anxiety, stress, chronic pain, or insomnia, the heavy indica lean and Myrcene-dominant terpene profile put Brainwash by Alien Labs firmly in nightcap territory. If you are newer to high-THC indicas or carry sensitivity to anxiety-inducing strains, start with two pulls and wait fifteen minutes before going further. The onset creeps, and by the time you feel it fully, there is no walking it back. The collaboration between Ted Lidie and Hopelord produced something genuinely heavy here, and the decade of shared history behind the cross shows in how polished the experience is.
