The Story Behind Strawberry Cough

The origin story starts in a basement in Connecticut. Kyle Kushman, then a respected grower and writer in New York, visited a fan who had a small personal grow tucked away downstairs. Before Kushman left, the grower pressed a clone into his hands. Back in NYC, Kushman tossed the cutting into a paper bag and forgot about it. Walking home, the smell of ripe strawberries started leaking through the bag, strong enough to catch his attention on the street.

Kushman grew the clone out and was immediately impressed. He shared cuts across Los Angeles, and the strain spread through dispensaries and grow rooms throughout the early 2000s. “I didn’t create her,” Kushman told High Times. “I just made her popular.” The genetics are believed to be Strawberry Fields crossed with a Haze, though the exact Haze lineage from that Connecticut basement remains unknown. Strawberry Cough gained unexpected pop culture fame when it appeared in Alfonso Cuaron’s 2006 film Children of Men, where Michael Caine’s character grows and smokes it by name. The “Cough” in the name is earned: the smoke expands dramatically in the lungs, catching even experienced smokers off guard.
