Purple Punch is one of the most important strains in modern cannabis history. Created by Supernova Gardens in Hawaii, the cross between Larry OG and Granddaddy Purple produced a cultivar that would go on to parent dozens of the most popular strains on the market today. It existed since around 2013 but did not explode in popularity until 2017, when influential growers like the Jungle Boys gained access to the clone and pushed it into the mainstream.

The parent strains read like a Hall of Fame ballot. Larry OG is a member of the OG Kush family, contributing robust structure, high resin production, and pine-heavy aromatics. Granddaddy Purple, introduced by Ken Estes in California in the early 2000s from Purple Urkle x Big Bud, brought the signature grape aroma, deep purple colouration, and heavy sedation that became Purple Punch’s calling card. Together, they created a strain that smells like grape Kool-Aid and hits like a sleeping pill. It has since become a cornerstone of breeding, appearing in the lineage of Slurricane, Mimosa, and countless other modern favourites.

The Nose
