Candy on the nose and calm in the body, the Original Zkittlez Donut is the easy-going one among the donuts we roll: two grams of Original Zkittlez wrapped around a core of Gelato 22 rosin. Sweet from the first pull to the last, and strong without turning into a knockout.

Why We Roll This One

Zkittlez is one of the defining strains of the last decade. Bred in Northern California by 3rd Gen Family and Terp Hogz from Grape Ape and Grapefruit, with a third parent the breeders have never named, it took first place at the 2016 Emerald Cup and went on to parent a whole wave of candy strains. A trademark dispute with the makers of Skittles later pushed its breeders to rename it The Original Z. Ours is a Thai-grown cut of that line, and on its own it is a mellow, sweet smoke, closer to a long exhale than a punch.

The most famous of those candy strains is Runtz, and Runtz is simply Zkittlez crossed with Gelato. That is the idea behind this roll. Gelato 22 belongs to the Gelato family, the Sunset Sherbet and Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies cross that turned dessert flavours into a whole category, and while little is on record about the 22 selection itself, it carries the family’s creamy, sweet citrus and berry. Rolled together, the Zkittlez brings the candy and the Gelato brings the cream: the same meeting that made Runtz, except that here one parent is the flower and the other is the rosin running through it. As a result, the joint gets longer and deeper without losing the easy character that makes Original Zkittlez worth smoking.

A word on the format. In a donut the rosin is rolled as a rope down the centre of the joint, never coated on the paper, and the flower is packed around it. The rosin melts just ahead of the burn, which keeps it slow and even and leaves the hollow ring of ash at the tip that the donut is named after.

The Nose

Sweet before anything else. Original Zkittlez smells like a bag of fruit candy, tropical and bright, with berry and a little of its parents’ grape and grapefruit somewhere underneath. The Gelato 22 core adds a creamy layer with a squeeze of citrus, so the whole joint reads like sherbet. Meanwhile the faintly floral, slightly woody undertone is the Linalool and the Humulene doing their quiet work.

The Smoke

Light and sweet for the first few pulls, almost too easy, which is the flower talking. Then the cherry finds the rosin and the smoke gets fuller and rounder, with the candy sliding towards creamy sherbet as you go. It burns slowly and evenly, the way a donut should, so expect it to last a while and pass it around. At the same time, a gentle warmth builds on the exhale, the Caryophyllene showing through, while the Limonene keeps the finish bright rather than heavy.

The High

Right from the first few pulls it lifts the mood: a light, euphoric buzz, properly happy, with an uplifting edge from the Gelato side that keeps the conversation going. Then it settles. The body loosens, you end up comfortably relaxed, and a steady, calming quiet takes the noise out of the day without pinning you to the sofa. Overall, this is the donut for an evening that still has plans in it: a long dinner, a film, a slow night with friends.

Who Should Try the Original Zkittlez Donut?

Anyone who likes the ritual of an infused joint but not the part where it flattens you. If you already smoke Original Zkittlez by the gram, the Original Zkittlez Donut is that same candy-sweet flower with half a gram of rosin in the middle: more of everything, same mood. It suits people who smoke to take the edge off stress at the end of the afternoon, and it is the donut we would point a newer infused smoker towards first. Still, two and a half grams with rosin inside is a strong joint, so share it and take it slowly, and if you are anxiety-prone, go easy on the first pulls.
