The Story Behind Cherry Zoap

Zoap is the strain that made soap a compliment. Bred as Rainbow Sherbet crossed with Pink Guava, it arrived with a flavour nobody had a word for: clean, floral, almost like fresh laundry, sitting on top of tropical fruit. It became one of the most chased cuts of the early 2020s on that oddity alone. Growers Choice, a seed house running since 1996, put Cherry Garcia over it to see whether the cherry would survive contact with something that strange.

It did, and it does the Zoap a favour. Cherry Garcia brings ripe stone-fruit sweetness and a bright, uplifting character that stops the soap note from taking over the whole experience. What you get is a cherry strain with an unusual clean finish rather than a Zoap with fruit painted on. Ours is a Thai grow of that cross, so the exact phenotype behind this lot is not documented, but the cherry is unmistakable in the jar.

The Nose

The first hit off the top of the jar is cherry, and not the cough-syrup kind. It reads as real fruit, dark and slightly jammy, with a berry layer sitting just behind it. Then the Zoap side shows up: a cool, clean, faintly floral note that some people call soapy and others call fresh, cut with a thin thread of citrus. Underneath it all there is a soft creamy weight and a dry earthy finish.

The buds are chunky and short, deep green with purple bruising on the bigger ones. Myrcene leads here, which explains the roundness and the slight heaviness sitting under all that fruit, while Limonene supplies the brightness and Caryophyllene the faint spice on the back end.

The Smoke

Thick, sweet smoke, and more of it than you expect from a bud this dense. The cherry is stronger on the palate than in the jar, which is rare, and the clean Zoap note turns into something closer to soft candy once it is burning. On the exhale a creamy sweet film coats everything and the earthiness only turns up at the very end. As a result it stays pleasant deep into a session rather than going flat after two hits.

The High

The opening is unmistakable: a fast, loud Euphoric rush that most people meet with a laugh. Giggly is not a marketing word for this one, it is the actual first ten minutes. Happy and Uplifting carry on from there and hold a genuinely good mood for the better part of an hour.

Then it changes gear. A Relaxed warmth works down from the shoulders and the volume drops, though it never becomes heavy enough to end the evening. Sleepiness is only moderate, so this sits comfortably in the late afternoon as well as after dinner. Two people sharing this one will talk for an hour and then go quiet at exactly the same moment.

If you buy on flavour, start here. Cherry Zoap is one of the tastiest things in the cabinet and the profile is genuinely unusual, so it rewards anyone bored of gas and cookies. It is also an easy social smoke: low anxiety risk, a friendly opening and no sharp edges, which makes it a safe pick for a group where not everyone smokes the same amount.
