The Story Behind Mars OG

Mars OG comes from the California Bay Area, and like a lot of the legendary OG cuts from that region, its full genetics remain partially shrouded in mystery. What is known: it descends from OG Kush, likely crossed with a heavy indica from the Emerald Triangle. The “Mars” in the name does not reference the planet for aesthetic reasons. It belongs to a group of so-called “planetary strains,” cannabis that starts its life cycle indoors before being moved outdoors to finish flowering under natural conditions. Jupiter OG, Neptune OG, and others share this naming convention.

The strain earned recognition at NorCal’s 2011 Cannabis Cup, winning first place for Best Concentrate. That award cemented Mars OG as a serious contender in the OG family tree. The Hindu Kush lineage suspected in its background shows up clearly in the heavy body effects and the earthy, piney terpene profile. This Thai-grown version stays faithful to the original character.

The Nose

Raw and old-school. Heavy earthy funk hits first, like damp forest floor after rain. Then sharp pine cuts through, resinous and fresh, followed by a diesel bite that adds fuel to the whole profile. There is a spicy kick in the background, almost black pepper, while a herbal undertone keeps things grounded. Myrcene drives that musky, earthy base.
