The Story Behind Amnesia Haze

Few strains carry as much Amsterdam coffee shop mythology as Amnesia Haze. The original Amnesia genetics trace back to the early 1990s, when American breeder David Paul Watson (known in the scene as “Sam the Skunkman”) brought a complex landrace cross from the US to the Netherlands. That early version combined Thai, Jamaican, Hawaiian, and Afghani genetics, a wide genetic base that already hinted at something special.

Once in Holland, the strain was crossed with Neville’s Haze, and the result quickly became a coffee shop staple. There is still debate over who made the final cross. Some credit Zwiep from Hy-Pro nutrients, while others point to independent Dutch breeders working behind the scenes. Regardless of who pressed the pollen, Amnesia Haze swept Cannabis Cup competitions, taking first place in both 2004 and 2012. It became one of the most recognized sativa-dominant strains in the world, a benchmark that every new haze hybrid gets measured against.

The Nose

Bright and loud right out of the jar. A sharp citrus blast leads, followed immediately by a tangy lemon peel note that clings to your fingers. Underneath, there is a warm earthy foundation that grounds the whole profile. Then the spicy bite creeps in on the back end, peppery and slightly warm, courtesy of the Caryophyllene. A subtle herbal quality ties everything together, almost like dried sage mixed with fresh lemon zest. The Limonene is doing the heavy lifting on the top notes, while Myrcene fills in the earthy base.
