The Story Behind Durban Poison

Durban Poison is one of the oldest and most storied strains in modern cannabis. It originates from the area around Durban, a port city on South Africa’s eastern coast. The Pondoland region nearby has been home to nearly a million small-scale cannabis cultivators for generations, making it essentially South Africa’s Emerald Triangle. In the late 1970s, cannabis activist and High Times columnist Ed Rosenthal encountered these South African genetics through a coffee shop in Amsterdam run by white South Africans who were importing the plant directly from the source.

Rosenthal recognized something special: a pure sativa with a remarkably short flowering time of around sixty days, unusual for a landrace of this type. He shared the seeds with botanist Mel Frank, who in turn passed them along to Sam the Skunkman, the legendary Amsterdam-based breeder already famous for Skunk 1. From there, Durban Poison was refined and stabilised for the Western market. It has since become one of the most important parent strains in breeding, contributing genetics to iconic crosses like Girl Scout Cookies, Cherry Pie, and dozens of modern hybrids. The strain itself remains pure, unaltered, a direct line to African cannabis genetics.
