The Story

Durban Poison is one of the oldest and most respected sativa landraces on the planet. It originates from the area around Durban in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, where it grew wild for centuries before Western breeders discovered it. In the late 1970s, cannabis activist and High Times columnist Ed Rosenthal acquired seeds from South African sources and passed them along to botanist Mel Frank. Frank refined the genetics, then shared his work with Sam the Skunkman, who carried the line to Amsterdam in the mid-1980s. Through Dutch seed banks, including Nevil Schoenmakers’ legendary Holland Seed Bank, Durban Poison went global. The strain became famous for its pure, clean energy, a sweet licorice nose, and zero couch-lock. It flowers in about 60 days, fast for a sativa, which made it popular with growers worldwide.
