The Story Behind Purple Haze

The connection between Purple Haze and Jimi Hendrix is one of the most misunderstood stories in cannabis. Hendrix did not name his 1967 song after the strain. He said the lyrics came to him in a dream after reading Philip Jose Farmer’s science fiction novel Night of Light. The strain was named after the song, not the other way around.

The genetics trace back to the early 1970s in Santa Cruz, California, where two brothers known as “R. Haze” and “J. Haze” crossed the best imported sativa genetics they could find: Mexican, Colombian, and Thai landraces. Their neighbour, Sam “The Skunkman,” supplied many of the seeds. The Haze Brothers produced three main phenotypes: Purple Haze (Colombian-dominant with purple colouring), Silver Blue Haze, and Lime Green Haze. Purple Haze was the most famous. Sam The Skunkman took Haze seeds to the Netherlands in 1976, where they were worked into stable seedlines that eventually produced Super Silver Haze and dozens of other legendary crosses. The Haze genetic family is one of the two or three most important lineages in cannabis history, and Purple Haze is where it entered popular culture. Growing it in Thailand brings the genetics full circle, since Thai sativa landraces are part of the original Haze genetic foundation.

The Nose

Sweet and inviting. Berry notes come first, ripe and jammy, with a grape quality that hints at the purple colouring in the genetics. Underneath, an earthy richness grounds the sweetness, warm and natural. Spicy touches sit at the edges, a subtle kick that keeps the profile from becoming too sugary. Myrcene builds the herbal, musky base, while Pinene introduces a clean, resinous freshness. Caryophyllene provides warmth and a gentle pepper note.
