The Story Behind Sour Diesel

Few strains carry the weight of history like Sour Diesel. Born in New York City in the mid-1990s, it emerged from the underground scene that shaped East Coast cannabis culture. The breeder, known as AJ (Asshole Joe Murray), created it around 1996, and the origin story is the stuff of legend. The prevailing account says it happened by accident: a crop of ’91 Chemdog got pollinated by Massachusetts Super Skunk (a cross of Skunk 1 and an Afghani landrace). The happy accident produced seeds, and AJ refined the best phenotype into what became known as AJ’s Sour Diesel.

Chemdog itself has its own wild backstory, originating from bag seeds scored at a Grateful Dead show in 1991. That lineage brought the chemical, fuel-forward terps that define the Diesel family. Super Skunk added funk and potency.
