The Story Behind Zushi Nozu

Nozu dropped in July 2023, and the name is a nod to Nobu, the high-end sushi restaurant chain. The Tenco co-founders Staks and Gerry had already built their reputation on the Zushi line (Blue Zushi took Best Overall Strain and Best Tasting at the 2023 Zalympix), so Nozu was their move into ultra-premium territory. The first drop came in packaging designed to look like champagne to-go bags, followed by collector’s boxes with imagery of lobster, steak, and truffles. It retailed at $1,000 a bag. The genetics underneath are the same Zkittlez x Kush Mints 11 cross that made Zushi famous, but the Nozu batch was selected for peak trichome expression and terpene concentration.

Staks brought European horticultural knowledge to the project (he pioneered bringing Cookies to Europe in 2014), while Gerry, a creative director out of San Jose with deep music industry ties, handled the brand identity. Together, they built The Tenco as a bridge between European and California genetics. The Zushi family now includes Blue Zushi, Yellow Zushi, Wazabi, and Pink Zushi (a collab with rapper Coi Leray), but Nozu remains the crown jewel of the line.

The Nose

You smell this one through the mylar. Bright candy sweetness hits first, the kind that reminds you of a bag of Skittles torn open. Then a sharp citrus cuts through, all lemon zest and tropical tang, courtesy of the dominant Limonene. Break a nug apart and the mint arrives, cool and clean against the sweetness. The Caryophyllene adds a peppery warmth underneath that keeps the nose from being one-note candy. Deeper in, there’s a gassy backbone and a faint berry tartness that rounds out the bottom end. The nugs themselves are dense and compact, dark green with purple edges, absolutely caked in trichomes with bright orange pistils poking through. Sticky to the touch, the kind where your fingers smell like it for an hour after grinding. Linalool floats underneath everything with a soft floral note that you only catch if you slow down and really breathe it in.

The Smoke
