The Purple Punch Strain Story
Purple Punch comes from Supernova Gardens, a crew of breeders out of Hawaii. The cross was made in 2012 on a trip to Washington, where they paired a male Granddaddy Purple from the legendary Ken Estes with a female Larry OG pulled from a pack of Cali Connection seed. It is a proper pedigree match: Granddaddy Purple brings the pungent grape and berry, while Larry OG sharpens it with a citrus, kush-forward backbone.
Supernova kept the clone tight at first, sharing it in 2013 with only a handful of trusted growers, but by 2017 Purple Punch had exploded into one of the most recognizable dessert strains on the planet. The look, the smell, and that knockout finish did the rest.
The Nose
Purple Punch smells like a candy aisle. The lead is sweet grape, the kind you get from purple soda or a roll of sweets, backed by ripe berry and a smooth vanilla note that gives it the dessert quality. Underneath sits a soft earthy base that stops the whole thing being pure sugar, with an overall sweetness that lingers on the exhale. That aroma rides on Caryophyllene and Limonene, with a touch of Pinene for lift. The nugs are dense and chunky, deep green shot through with purple and packed in frost.
The High
The name is a warning. Purple Punch opens fast with a euphoric, almost giddy happy rush to the head, then the indica side lands and it turns into a heavy, relaxed, calming body melt. The back end gets genuinely sleepy, which is why this is firmly a nighttime strain and a favourite for people who struggle to switch off. At 22 to 25% THC it is a solid 3 out of 5, and with low anxiety risk it stays comfortable.
