Why Rainbow Zoap Gets a Rosin Core

Rainbow Zoap is something of a family reunion. Its two parents, Rainbow Sherbet 11 (better known as RS11) and Zoap, both carry Pink Guava and are usually credited to Deo Farms in Oakland, and Zoap earned its odd name from the clean, soapy floral note that sits on top of its nose. Seed catalogues credit LIT Farms with crossing the two back together. The result kept the fruit of both parents and grows large calyxes that often fade to purple under a thick coat of resin.

Smoked as a gram, Rainbow Zoap is quick, giggly fun that slides into a stoney body. What it loses in a plain joint is the candy, which tends to turn to char after the first third. A donut fixes that. Instead of being smeared on the paper, the rosin is rolled into a thin rope and set down the centre of the joint with flower packed around it, so it melts just ahead of the burn, leaves the hollow ring at the tip that the format is named after, and keeps the cherry moving slowly. We chose La Bomba for the core, a Compound Genetics cross of Wedding Cake and Jet Fuel Gelato, because its vanilla and lemon sit right on top of the flower’s sweetness while its diesel undertone matches the gas in the Zoap side. The two read as one profile rather than two.

The Nose

Candy comes first, loud and unmistakable: sugared fruit from the Sherbet line, wrapped in bright citrus peel that owes a lot to the Limonene. Sniff again and you find the floral, faintly soapy note the Zoap parent is named for, then a line of gas under everything that keeps the whole thing from tipping into pure sweets. The rosin adds soft vanilla and a little diesel of its own, which is why the tube smells more like dessert at a petrol station than a bag of candy.

The Smoke

Thicker than the nose suggests. The early pulls taste of candy and citrus with a creamy roundness from the rosin, and because the core burns so slowly, that sweetness is still there well past the halfway mark, which is the whole reason to roll this flower as a donut. Towards the end the Caryophyllene and the gas move forward, peppery and a little fuel-heavy on the exhale, while the Myrcene gives the last third a heavier, musky finish. Keep the pulls modest. The smoke expands in the chest, and a greedy draw on a rosin core will make most people cough.

The High

Laughter arrives before the weight does. The start is quick, euphoric and properly giggly, the kind of opening where a bad joke lands far better than it deserves and everyone is happy to stay exactly where they are. Then the body takes over. Shoulders drop, you sink into something deeply relaxed, and finally the stone turns heavy, the same stoney body lock this flower gives as a plain gram. With the rosin keeping it alight, the slide down is long and gradual rather than sudden. Great company for a film you have already seen, terrible company for anything with a deadline.

Anyone who loves fruity, candy-forward strains but wants one joint to hold a small group’s attention for a whole sitting. The Rainbow Zoap Donut makes the most sense shared between two or three people on a slow evening. If you already know the Rainbow Zoap gram, expect the same giggles with a much longer and heavier tail. It tends to suit people winding down from a stressful day, or from a nagging headache that will not quite leave.
