Bubble Gum is the 1980s Indiana classic that smells like pink candy, with berry and a soft floral note over a happy, relaxed high that never pins you down.

Bubble Gum

Bubble Gum is a balanced hybrid (50/50) from the Indiana Bubble Gum line, worked by Indiana growers in the 1980s, then inbred in Amsterdam from 1993 and made famous through the 90s. Reports on the line put it around 16-20% THC, and at its best it smells exactly like its name, pink candy sweetness with berry and a light floral note, before a balanced high that lifts the mood and loosens the body without knocking you out. Best for day / night.

The Story Behind Bubble Gum

Start in Indiana, in the 1980s. That is where growers first worked this line, before it moved to New England and then to Holland. In 1993 three different female plants went to two breeding teams: Adam of T.H. Seeds on one side, Simon and Tony of Cerebral Seeds on the other. Simon then spent five generations inbreeding his selection, on a base he describes as Mexican and Colombian sativas with an Afghani indica, and that work became the Serious Seeds line, which its breeder credits with High Times Cannabis Cup honours in 1994, 1995 and 1999. So this is an inbred line rather than a fresh cross of two parents. You will also see the name written as one word, Bubblegum, which is how it reads on our shelf.

The two lines never quite agreed on what they had. Simon files his as mostly sativa, T.H. Seeds’ version leans indica, and Serious Seeds’ plants throw two phenotypes, one leaning each way, so the card below settles at 50/50. Our jar names no breeder, and because both lines grew from the same Indiana plants, we cannot tell you which one this is. The profile here is therefore read from what the breeders, the strain databases and smokers report for the line, not measured on our jar, and the THC range is the middle of the figures reported for the line, not a lab result.

The Nose

In a good cut, pink bubble gum leads, sweet and gently artificial in the best way, like a fresh piece straight out of the wrapper. Behind it sits a ripe berry note that leans toward strawberry candy, a general fruity brightness and a light floral lift on top. Underneath there is something earthy, and how loud it gets varies: smokers report that some lots lose the gum and drift toward earth and hay. The faint peppery prickle under the sugar is the Caryophyllene. At the same time Limonene keeps the fruit lively, Myrcene lends the base a soft, musky weight, and a little Humulene adds a dry, woody edge so it stops short of pure sugar.

The Smoke

When a cut holds on to its gum, the flavour survives the flame. The inhale is sweet and candied, the gum sitting right on the tongue, and one grower compared a T.H. Seeds plant to Big League Chew, which gives you the idea. On the exhale the berry and strawberry step forward, the fruity sweetness lingers, and the floral side shows up as a light perfume on the way out. Toward the end of a joint the earthy base rises to meet you, a reminder of the old-school plant under all that candy.

The High

The smile shows up early. The first minutes are euphoric and happy, the mood climbs, and the whole thing feels uplifting in a light, sunny way. Ideas start to flow and it can turn creative; with friends around, the laughs are never far off, which is why giggly makes the list. Then the body joins in. A soft tingly buzz runs down the arms, the shoulders let go, and you settle somewhere relaxed and calming, the racing thoughts quiet while the head stays clear. On top of that it is long lasting, so one joint covers a good stretch of the afternoon, and near the end the hungry side wakes up. Decades after its Cannabis Cup run, this is still what a feel-good hybrid is meant to do: lift you up, slow you down a little and leave you on your feet.

Who Should Try Bubble Gum?

Anyone after a sweet, friendly smoke that keeps them on their feet. Bubble Gum sits in the middle of our intensity scale, its THC is modest next to most modern jars, and the anxiety risk is low, so it is an easy recommendation for newer smokers and for anyone who has had a rough ride on something stronger. It makes good company on a stressful day or through a low mood; meanwhile the relaxed body side takes the edge off chronic pain, migraines and nausea, and the appetite it brings is welcome when eating has been hard. Some people also reach for it when anxiety runs high, and the calm, clear-headed feel suits that. Sleepiness is low, so it fits the afternoon and the early evening without sending you to bed. In small doses it even works through the day: start with a couple of pulls and let the flavour lead.
