The Story Behind Northern Lights

Northern Lights is arguably the most important indica ever bred. The original plants were created in the 1970s by a mysterious figure known only as “The Indian,” working on an island near Seattle, Washington. He grew a numbered series, Northern Lights #1 through #11, from which phenotypes #1 and #5 emerged as exceptional for potency, resin production, and yield. In 1985, Dutch seed entrepreneur Neville Schoenmakers discovered the strain while travelling in the United States and brought female clones back to the Netherlands, where Sensi Seeds commercially developed and stabilized the line.

The awards came immediately. Best Indica at the 1988 and 1989 High Times Cannabis Cup. Overall Cannabis Cup winner in 1990. At least six major awards total. The strain dominated harvest festivals so thoroughly that there were requests to retire it from competition. Northern Lights went on to parent Super Silver Haze, Shiva Skunk, and hundreds of other crosses. It established the template for what a high-quality indica should be, and it remains the benchmark against which all indicas are measured. Growing it in Thailand connects one of the world’s oldest cannabis cultures with one of the most foundational genetics in Western cannabis breeding.

The Nose

Deep and resinous. The sweet, earthy base hits first, rich like damp forest floor after rain, ancient and grounding. Then a pine sharpness cuts through, crisp and resinous, courtesy of the Afghani genetics and heavy Myrcene content. Spicy warmth lingers at the edges, Caryophyllene adding a peppery depth that’s unmistakably OG-era cannabis. Limonene provides a faint citrus brightness, just enough to prevent the profile from going entirely dark. There’s nothing candy or fruity about this nose. It’s old-school, honest, and complex in its simplicity. Compact, dense buds with dark green leaves, minimal foxtailing, and a heavy trichome blanket that glistens under light.

The Smoke

Heavy and satisfying. The earthy sweet quality fills the mouth on the inhale, thick and resinous. Pine emerges on the exhale with a clean, almost menthol-like coolness. The spicy kick sits in the back of the throat, warm and lingering. The smoke is dense, expanding slowly in the lungs, the kind of pull that makes you lean back instinctively. Flavour stays remarkably consistent from start to finish. The simplicity is the point: three notes played perfectly rather than twelve notes played loosely. Even burn, grey ash, and a joint that smokes itself.

The High

The euphoric warmth arrives in the first minute, soft and enveloping. Then the deep relaxation begins its descent, working downward from the head through the neck, shoulders, and into every limb. This is not a gradual process. By the ten-minute mark, the sedation has fully arrived, anchoring you to whatever surface you’re on.
