The Story Behind Sherb Z

The farm behind this jar gave us the cross in three words, Zkittlez x Sherb, and the name simply turns them around. The Z is the easy half to trace. Zkittlez came out of California, developed by growers at 3rd Gen Family and TerpHogz from Grape Ape and Grapefruit. A third parent was never identified, because, as Brandon Parker of 3rd Gen Family put it, there was no male. It placed fifth at the 2014 Emerald Cup and took first place there in 2016, and its candy profile has been bred into crosses ever since.

What the farm meant by Sherb is our reading, not its words, but it is the usual one: in cultivar names, Sherb normally means Sunset Sherbet, the San Francisco cut from Mr. Sherbinski that crossed Girl Scout Cookies with Pink Panties and later became a parent of Gelato. It is also the Sherb in Permanent Marker, whose recipe reads Biscotti x Jealousy x Sherb Bx1. No database or lab lists a Sherb Z yet, so what follows comes from the two parents rather than from tests on this jar. A close documented relative, Zerbert, crosses Blue Sherbet with Zkittlez. It is described as relaxing rather than bright, with a light tingle and a quick appetite, which is roughly what this family predicts.

The Nose

Think fruit bowl rather than fuel can. Both parents share the same core, so this is the part of the profile we can call with the most confidence. Bright citrus comes first, then berry and sugary candy, everything sweet and soft at the edges. On top of that, the Zkittlez side leans toward grapefruit and tropical fruit; an early Emerald Cup write-up said it smelled like tangerine juice and tequila with some lime. Meanwhile, Sunset Sherbet adds rounder, fruity notes that can drift toward creamy mint. Underneath the fruit, Caryophyllene, the terpene both parents lead with, leaves a faint pepper, while Limonene keeps the citrus up and Linalool softens the finish.

The Smoke

The taste should track the nose closely. Expect the citrus to lead the inhale and the berry and candy sweetness to bloom on the exhale. A light pepper underneath stops it tasting like a sweet shop. With no lab sheet on this jar, that is a forecast from the family rather than a measurement. Even so, small pulls keep the fruit brighter for longer.

The High

It starts with the mood. A happy, euphoric lift arrives within a few pulls, uplifting without any race to it, and a light, tingly buzz follows, which is the Sherbet side showing. Then the Zkittlez half takes over. The body loosens, the mind goes quiet and relaxed, and the last stretch turns heavy and drowsy, with a hungry finish. At its moderate strength it is mellow rather than knockout, the kind of jar that lets a slow afternoon roll into a night in without anyone noticing.
