Strawberry Zkittlez by Salus Samui is a fresh frozen wash of an indica-leaning hybrid (40/60) born from a strawberry parent crossed into Zkittlez, and the fruit makes it through the ice better than most: ripe strawberry first, the Z candy shell right behind it. The source flower runs around 18% to 24% THC, and the high starts bright and chatty before it settles into the body. Best for day or night.

The Story Behind Strawberry Zkittlez

Strawberry Zkittlez is less one clone than a family name. Breeders have been crossing strawberry-forward plants into Zkittlez for years, so the cut you meet depends on whose seeds started it. The best documented version is DNA Genetics’ ZtrawberrieZ, listed as Strawberry Banana x Zkittlez, which carries the Banana Kush and Bubble Gum background of Strawberry Banana along with it; other lines use a plain strawberry parent instead. Either way, the idea behind the cross is the same: take the most famous candy nose of the last decade and push it toward real fruit.

The other half is Zkittlez, the Grape Ape x Grapefruit line from 3rd Gen Family and Terp Hogz that swept the 2016 Emerald Cup and now runs as The Original Z after a settlement with the sweet maker. Salus Samui is a hash maker here on Koh Samui, and a candy and fruit profile is a smart one to wash. Fresh frozen means the flower went into the freezer at harvest instead of hanging to dry, so the bright top notes that drying and curing tend to flatten are still there when the resin comes off the screen.

The Nose

Strawberry is the headline, and it reads as the fruit rather than the flavouring: strawberry jam warmed in the sun, with the candy coating of the Z parent wrapped tight around it. Behind that sits a sugared sweet note and a sharp strip of citrus, lemon and lime more than orange, which is the Limonene keeping everything lifted. Give it a second and something tropical comes through underneath, then the finish turns soft and creamy, closer to strawberry yoghurt than to sweets. A faint peppery warmth right at the back is Caryophyllene, while Myrcene and a dry trace of Humulene stop the sugar from tipping over. At 90 micron the screen holds the bigger, fuller resin heads, and that is where most of this fruit lives.

The Smoke

Crumbled over a bowl or folded into a joint, the strawberry leads the inhale and holds on longer than you would expect from a fruit wash. Then the lime edge shows up mid pull, and the exhale brings the candy shell back, round and sugary, with that creamy finish lingering on the lips. Low heat is kinder to it. As soon as it burns hot the bright fruit is the first thing to go, and what is left is mostly sweet and a little earthy. In short, a small piece goes further than its size suggests, so there is no need to load up.

The first fifteen minutes are the bright part. A euphoric lift arrives quickly, clearly uplifting, and it makes people talk: this is a properly sociable hash, better with a table of friends than alone in a dark room.
