Zkittlez Strain

The Zkittlez strain is the one that taught a whole generation what “candy weed” actually means. An indica-leaning hybrid (30/70) built from Grape Ape x Grapefruit and a third parent its breeders have never named, it runs 22 to 25% THC and trades knockout potency for something rarer: a bag of tropical fruit candy that genuinely tastes like the rainbow. The Zkittlez Strain Story

Zkittlez was born in California’s Emerald Triangle around 2015, out of a collaboration between two collectives: 3rd Gen Family and Terp Hogz. The legend goes like this. 3rd Gen Family had a SoCal cross of Grape Ape and Grapefruit going around and gifted a cut to Brandon Parker, who ran it alongside Green R. Fieldz and Tony Mendocino under the Terp Hogz banner. Somewhere in that process a third strain got folded in. The breeders have never said what it was, and most growers credit that secret parent for both the extra candy sweetness and the rock-solid stability the line became known for.

The result swept the 2016 Emerald Cup and stacked up roughly seven awards between 2016 and 2019. The name was always a wink at the candy, spelled with a Z to keep the lawyers at bay, and in 2023 the lawyers caught up anyway: after a settlement with the sweet maker, Terp Hogz now runs it officially as “The Original Z.” Whatever you call it, this is the plant that kicked off the entire dessert and candy era of cannabis. A huge slice of the Z named flower you see on shelves today traces straight back to it.

The Nose

Break a nug and it really does smell like someone just tore open a bag of fruit candy. There is berry and grape up front, a tart squeeze of grapefruit and citrus underneath, then a tropical juiciness that rounds it all off, every bit of it reading sweet and fruity rather than loud or gassy. That candy-soft character is unusual, and it comes from a terpene trio you rarely see leading from the front. Linalool lends the floral, calming edge, while Caryophyllene and Humulene tuck a faint peppery, earthy base underneath so the sweetness never turns sickly. The buds tend to come dense and chunky, dark green with the occasional purple flash inherited from the Grape Ape side.

The High

Zkittlez does not hit like a freight train, and that is exactly the appeal. The first ten minutes run bright and euphoric, a happy mood lift that has you reaching for conversation and a snack. Then the indica half takes the wheel and the whole thing sinks into a warm, relaxed body calm. The back half gets genuinely sleepy, so treat this as an evening smoke rather than a wake and bake. At 22 to 25% THC it lands around a 3 out of 5 for intensity, and that is part of why people love it: strong enough to matter, soft enough that it will not flatten a lighter smoker. Keep snacks close, the hunger is real. If you deal with stress, low mood, or trouble switching off at night, this is one of the friendlier strains to reach for, and with low anxiety risk it rarely tips anyone into paranoia.
