Gelato 22 by Salus Samui is a piatella pressed from the Gelato family cut of Sunset Sherbet crossed with Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies, dark and dense in the tin the way a piatella should be. The source flower runs about 20% to 26% THC, and the press turns a sweet citrus cream into something deeper and rounder. Best for the evening, though it stays workable.

The Story Behind the Press

Piatella is what happens when you stop treating hash as something to dry and start treating it as something to cure. The fresh resin is pressed and left under pressure for weeks, so the material slowly darkens, the texture turns glossy and putty like, and the aroma stops being bright and starts being deep. The Nose

Deeper than the Gelato name leads you to expect. The sweet is still the first thing, but it reads baked rather than fresh, and the citrus that would be sharp in the flower has turned into something closer to marmalade. A dark berry note sits under it, then the creamy finish that the Thin Mint side is responsible for. The piece itself is almost black, oily to the touch, and it warms into a soft putty between your fingers. That woody, faintly hoppy edge right at the back is the Humulene, and you only find it because the press brought it forward.

The Smoke

Round, slow and generous. It does not have the immediate aromatic punch of a fresh frozen wash and it is not trying to: the flavour arrives a beat later and then stays much longer, sweet and creamy with the citrus turning almost caramelised on the exhale. It melts completely and evenly, which is the whole argument for a well made piatella, and it takes a higher temperature than a loose wash without going harsh. In short, this is a piece to sit with rather than to rush.

The High

Balanced and genuinely usable, which is unusual in a pressed hash. It opens euphoric and mildly uplifting, and there is a clear enough stretch in the middle to stay focused on something if you want to. The body follows without ever taking over: relaxed settling into steady calming, comfortable rather than sedating.
