The Story Behind Toad Venom

The genetics are West Coast Connoisseurs and Ronin Seeds: Animal Face, from Seed Junky, crossed into Sin Mintz, which is itself Sin Mint Cookies over Zkittlez. On paper that is a cookie line pushed through candy. In the jar it comes out far stranger, because what made this cut famous was not the cross but the hunt.

In 2021 Green Dragon popped all thirty Ronin seeds and kept exactly one plant. They called her Becky. Three years later she was the most argued-about cultivar in California, and in May 2024 two nurseries released her within a week of each other: Ronin put 200 clones out at Goat Global in Los Angeles at 630 dollars for two, and Green Dragon followed with several hundred more at 1,000 dollars for three cuttings, which came with a T-shirt, a jar of flower and a birth certificate. People were paying that for a rooted cutting. Meanwhile the name kept collecting nicknames and lawsuits in equal measure.

One warning while you go reading. Eleven Thirty Genetics sells a completely different plant under the same name, a Venom OG crossed with All Gas OG. It is not this. If the lineage you find does not say Animal Face and Sin Mintz, you are looking at the other Toad Venom.

The Nose

It does not smell like a dessert strain, whatever the cookie lineage suggests. The first thing up is doughy, raw and slightly sour, the smell of a batch of cookie dough rather than a baked cookie. Then a cold mint cuts straight through it, which is the Sin Mint side arriving, and underneath the whole thing sits on a thick gassy base with a genuinely chemical edge. A bright citrus lift keeps it from going flat, and there is a vague fruity sweetness from the Zkittlez further back. The buds are heavily frosted, dense, dark green with purple running through the sugar leaf, and they are sticky enough that a grinder is not optional. That peppery weight is the Caryophyllene, and this cut has plenty of it.

The Smoke

Thick and oily, and it coats. The inhale is mostly gas and that chemical funk, then halfway through the exhale the mint arrives cold and the dough comes back behind it, sweeter than it smelled. It expands in the chest more than you expect and it will make a light smoker cough. As you go the citrus fades out entirely and the last third is pure resin. Heavy oil ring in the joint, slow burn, and the flavour holds to the end rather than thinning.

The High

Paralytic is the word the California reviews kept using, and it is fair. It opens euphoric and warm, maybe five minutes of feeling pleasantly happy about your decision, and then the body arrives all at once. Relaxed goes straight past comfortable into a deep body high, the limbs get heavy, and it settles into a flat, wide calming that does not lift for a couple of hours. Sleepiness reads high on this one and the jar earns it. This is a cut people bought at 500 dollars a clone and then discovered they could only smoke after dinner.

Who Should Try Toad Venom by Mr Gelatti?

Buy this one if you already know you like heavy, and if a gas and chemical nose reads as a feature rather than a warning. It is a poor choice for an afternoon, a worse one for a first cali jar, and an excellent one for a night that ends early. Anxiety risk sits at medium and the potency is real, so take half of what you think and give it fifteen minutes. If you deal with chronic pain or you cannot get to sleep, this is close to the top of what we carry.
