The Story Behind Zkittlez

Every candy strain on every menu in the world traces its DNA back to this one. Zkittlez, now officially rebranded as “The Original Z” after a trademark settlement with Mars Wrigley, was created around 2015 by Terp Hogz (Green R. Fieldz and Tony Mendocino) alongside Brandon Parker of 3rd Gen Family, working out of California’s Emerald Triangle. The genetics came from a mysterious figure known as “Gas Station Bob,” and the breeders spent years stabilizing the line for a terpene profile that nobody had experienced in cannabis before: genuine fruit candy.

The awards came fast. First Place Indica at the 2015 High Times Cannabis Cup in both San Francisco and Michigan. First Place Flowers at the 2016 Emerald Cup. Over 38 awards total. The strain became so dominant that it reshaped what the industry valued, shifting the conversation from pure THC numbers to terpene expression. In 2021, Mars Wrigley sued over the name, and the 2023 settlement forced the rebrand to “The Original Z,” but the genetics remain untouched. The Nose
